How law students from the University of Oklahoma explored the automation of documents in practice

The instructors of where College of Law in Oklahoma wanted to prepare their students for real practice. During their technological and legal course of practice, students are exposed to tools and processes that should be part of any prospective business. Four students were responsible for investigating the automation software for documents and used Clio Draft to create three common documents: a confidentiality agreement, a dissolution article and an LLC minute liquidation document.

None of the students had already been exposed to the use of documents automation software. The instructors needed a tool that would be easy to implement and experiment. Students organized themselves as a company of four members ready to integrate their new document automation tool.

“I had not been exposed to the automation of documents during my internships or with one of the companies I worked in,” said student Lauren Wilmes. “I think that is something that more companies and more lawyers should know and can use.”

The students expressed their concern about what, once in practice, they do not receive the mentorship necessary to implement these important tools. They discussed a feeling that young lawyers are more willing to learn new technologies while older lawyers will not care.

The students of the course discovered that, even if there was a learning curve, Clio Draft was easy to learn and adopt in their experimental practice.
